Starting a new job is exciting, intense and sometimes nerve-wracking. From application through to interview through to the first day on the job, there’s a lot information for new starters to take on.
Similarly, the induction or onboarding process can be hard work. With so much information to absorb, it can be a bit overwhelming. One way to make the whole process more enjoyable and memorable for staff is to provide them with a welcome pack.
Welcome packs help introduce your business to your new colleagues, combining brand identity, key information and contact lists, house rules, and branded gear to help new staff feel at home right away.
This is something that creative agencies are particularly good at, as creative licence and imagination can help to turn a mundane introductory procedure into something fun, unique and authentic.

1. M&C Saatchi: The brand in a box
M&C Saatchi is an international advertising agency which, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its founding, began producing welcome packs for its new staff.
These welcome packs continue to be produced, with seven unique objects inside which reflect the core values of the brand: straightforward, diverse, daring, fun, persistent, curious, and original.
It’s a great way to get new staff to engage immediately with the brand’s identity and values, with tangible items to help bring the abstract to life. And with everything from a useful multi-charger to a grow-your-own-plant kit, it’s a fun talking point on day one.
2. R/GA London: The red carpet welcome
R/GA pulls no punches with its welcome pack – new starters get a £50 Nike voucher and 30% off at the flagship Nike Town London on Oxford Street.
To sweeten what is already a pretty sweet deal, the first coffee is on the house; a fully stamped loyalty card for a nearby coffeehouse is included, as well some branded office essentials including a notepad, pen, and memory stick. There’s no questioning that they want new starters to stick around.
3. Dobell: Live the brand, wear the brand
Dobell is a formal menswear company which specialises in tuxedos and suits. As such, working for the company requires some fashion credibility.
The company does its best to give new starters a helping hand, sending them a welcome pack in the post which comes in a branded presentation box and contains some of the company’s best-selling accessories.
Pocket squares, lapel pins and bow ties aren’t necessarily everyday attire, but as most people know: when you look good, you feel good. It never hurts to give colleagues a small confidence boost.
4. YourStudio: The career journey metaphor
This one is only a concept, but it’s very Silicon Valley. New starters at YourStudio are (soon to be) given a welcome pack which conveys the theme of “growth”.
When new colleagues open their kit, they will find a plant seedling, and in the pot is a unique chip which, when scanned, takes them to a digital training set, with articles, objective tracking and key business information.
It’s so 2050, and there’s a nice desk plant to boot. What’s not to like?
There are good reasons to put effort into making your new colleagues comfortable in their role. You only get one chance to make a good first impression!
