It’s Small Business Advice Week! In honour of the exciting national event, we’re gathering some of the best tips we can find from five areas of business management that are key to remember – even if you don’t have the staff to cover them.
Whether you’re a microbusiness with a single workspace, or on your way up the chain with an expanding workforce, the field of Facilities should never be forgotten. It encompasses the logistics of site management and health and safety, so not only could correct Facilities consideration protect you legally, it could ensure the safety of yourself and any staff members.
Aubrey Davis, our in-house Facilities expert, is here to offer his Facilities must-knows for businesses of all sizes…
If you’re a start-up…
“Ensure you have more than adequate and appropriate insurance to cover losses which may range from theft to flood damage,” says Aubrey.
If your small or medium business has staff, you will also need to get Employer’s Liability insurance. See this guide from the government to find out everything you need to know.
If you’re a small company that would like to grow…
“If thinking about relocation, consider the opportunities for space and how flexible your potential new site would be for future growth,” Aubrey advises, to avoid a lot of expenditure when your business needs could quickly outgrow your site’s capabilities.
“Also think about whether this would be an attractive or accessible place for the type of individuals you have in mind to recruit.”
If you’re an established company looking to maintain…
Now you need to up your Facilities game – or as Aubrey would recommend, “Consider risks at all levels regularly.” This may include considering areas you haven’t thought about before, such as disaster recovery and business continuity solutions.
“Do not ignore or disparage Health and Safety legislation as it could cost you your company or your life! The website www.HSE.gov.uk is a great resource.”
And the three final mantras to remember for good Facilities management:
- Be organised, methodical and systematic
- Plan for the worst – it sometimes happens!
- Remain calm
