Owning and running a small business can be all consuming, which is why so many business leaders check their emails constantly throughout the day and work through a weekend. As the business grows and takes on more staff, learning how to delegate tasks and engage employees becomes the next challenge. Knowing the pros and cons of your leadership style can help you avoid potential pitfalls. That’s why we’ve created this new quiz to help you understand just that.
We surveyed 250 small business owners, examining the energy they put into their businesses, and the way they run them; from the day-to-day tasks, to management of staff, to pitching for new clients. 70 per cent of management revealed they fail to delegate, while 62 per cent checked their emails constantly throughout the day. Almost half (47 per cent) have worked through a weekend, due to work commitments. What’s more, 74 per cent say that their relationships with their partner, friends or family have been affected by working long hours.
With the summer Olympics on the horizon, we couldn’t help but see a parallel with the way SME owners run their businesses and the way athletes train for their sport. Both disciplines face key challenges in setting goals, staying ahead of the competition, and recovering from setbacks.
